With over 1000 members, Monash Marketing Student Society (MMSS) is the biggest and most active student group at Monash, widely known for giving marketing students a real edge as they launch their careers.

First published in 2016, the MMSS Careers Book quickly became one of the society’s most valuable assets. Professionally edited and designed annually by RM, it’s helped thousands navigate their path – bringing together alumni stories, company insights and no-BS advice on breaking into the industry.

And while it earned that reputation over the years, MMSS knew it was time to shake things up and give the book a fresh new look.

Challenge

In 2024, MMSS made the bold decisions to scrap the print model and go fully digital. But the vision wasn’t just ‘put the book online’.

Instead, the team wanted to build a living, breathing platform that would:

  • Preserve the Careers Book’s trusted voice and useful content
  • Better engage digital-native students
  • Reflect the energy and identity of MMSS
  • Provide year-round value to students, alumni and employers alike

The brief was ambitious: transform a once-a-year book into a future-ready flagship site.

Solution

RM worked closely with MMSS and the Monash Department of Marketing to reimagine the resource from the ground up.

Here’s how we did it:

  • Reset the brief: We collaborated across teams to clarify what to keep (alumni stories and career tips) and what to elevate (design, structure and personality).
  • Named the platform: After exploring dozens of options, we landed on ‘Marketing Careers Central’. Clear and confident.
  • Built a strong framework: With a keen eye on user experience, we structured the site around a ‘Get’ concept – Get inspired, Get hired, Get involved, Get informed and Get in touch – giving students a clear sense of where to go and what to expect.
  • Created Coach Cody: To give the advice section more energy, we introduced a fictional persona who dishes out straight-talking, Gen Z-friendly career tips with humour and warmth.
  • Kept MMSS front and centre: From tone to visuals to weekly WIPs, we made sure the students were in the driver’s seat – and built their ownership into every step of the process.

Results

Marketing Careers Central is now a dynamic digital hub – updated regularly with alumni features, employer content, blogs and events.  We also delivered:

  • An 8-page O-Week handout to promote the new platform
  • 4 outreach email templates to connect with more alumni
  • A 4-page employer guide to drive industry engagement
  • A 6-month blog calendar to keep the site fresh and relevant

Today, RM continues to support MMSS with ongoing writing and creative guidance.

What's next

RM now maintains and evolves the website in partnership with MMSS.

We’re constantly looking for new ways to expand its reach, strengthen its value for students – and create more opportunities for employers to connect.

With a new cohort of students at the helm of MMSS each year, the next phase is all about momentum. Fresh ideas, new goals and a shared ambition to keep pushing the platform further mean there’s plenty more to come.

And for us? It’s exactly the kind of ongoing, collaborative work we love to do.
